We decided to stay at the Great Western Hotel in Jackson California Saturday night as we were not familiar with the area and were not sure of how long of a drive from home the trip would be. Everyone met around 9am Sunday morning to register at the Camp Entrance in Pine Grove just above the camp. We began our trek down a steep well maintained dirt road escorted by one of the camps guides. We would stop every now and then to insure that everyone was doing ok along with viewing the beautiful scenery, tasting wild black berries, grapes and figs. This place is just awesome. We finally made it to the bottom of the hill and was directed to our cabin. To our surprise, it was very nice, clean and neat. We proceed to unload our gear and unpack.
The camp was well organized for the new bees which we were. First we attended an orientation showing us the camp area and talking about what activities will be held during the week. We enjoyed prospecting for gold everyday during our stay. Sluicing along a beautiful river, filled with Trout just waiting for a fisherman to catch them. Water was cold, but you got used to it fast as it was refreshing during the heat of the day. Some of the folks just come here to relax and enjoy the scenery. We traveled to Chinese Camp and did some crevice prospecting along with using a rocker box to clean up the material what had been found. There it was, some real good color in the pan. We were able to participate wiz banging, which is a great way to find gold. One day the activity was a hike up the river. Did some more prospecting, found more gold and other treasures. When they ran their trommel, wow, that was cool. Loading the material into a huge classifier to remove large rocks, then taking the material to the hopper, then down through the hopper into the trommel. When we shut it down, there for our eyes to see, many nice sized nuggets of beautiful gold seeing the light of day.
The camp has a Trading Post which has many necessities you may need as we get into a hurry and forget stuff. It is set up like a museum, lots of old stuff that has been found for all to see. You could have something to eat, from hamburgers to chicken dinners.
During the weeks activities, when the participating group found gold, there was a card game, winner gets the gold, second place gets the black sand with the finer gold in it. A different day, it was dice, winner gets the told, second place gets the black sand with the finer gold in it. Saturday night was the highlight, New York Steaks, Pan Fried Bread, Potatoes which I think was the best I've tasted, Corn on the cob, Salad with delicious dressing to die for. Outdoor music was provided by an excellent musician named Johnny L Gonzales...This dinner can't be beat with the sound of the river, beautiful scenery and good people... Roaring Camp, the Land of Gold...
Roaring Camp is a beautiful place to visit and vacation. The staff were some of the nicest folks you will ever meet. Then made sure that your stay is one that you will never forget. For me, I've been wanting to go here for years and finally made thanks to one of my friends pictures he posted on facebook. Many of the people return year after year seeing the same friends they had made for a lifetime just by coming here. Check it out, I think you won't be disappointed.
